Partial Dentures
Unlike complete dentures, which are used to replace a full set of missing teeth, partial dentures are used to fill in the gaps left by one or more lost teeth. They are made up of false teeth attached to a pink or gum-coloured plastic base. A partial denture is normally clipped securely to remaining natural teeth with metal clasps to ensure a great fit. However a precision partial denture has internal attachments rather than clasps that attach to adjacent crowns, to give a more natural look.
Not only does a partial denture improve your smile by filling in the spaces created by missing teeth, it also prevents other teeth from changing position.
Partial Denture aftercare
To keep this kind of denture looking its best and to maintain your oral health, clean it regularly as follows:
- After eating, rinse the denture with water to remove any food (it’s a good idea to do this over a sink containing some water just in case you drop it!)
- Don’t forget to clean your natural teeth, tongue, cheeks and roof of your mouth with a toothbrush
- Gently clean your dentures daily by soaking and brushing with a non-abrasive denture cleanser to remove food, plaque and other deposits
- Place the denture in water or a denture soaking solution overnight (most dentures need to be kept moist to retain their shape) but remember to rinse
- before putting them back in your mouth, especially if using a soaking solution as this can irritate your mouth
Also don’t forget to attend regular dental check-ups and be sure to see us if your denture is not fitting properly.
